In a world with so much noise at every turn, it may be challenging to see how silence can be a powerful tool.    On the physical level, it increases our listening and observation skills.  On the mental level, it sharpens our acute sensing skills.   On  the Spiritual level, it increases our ability to hear from within and links us to higher recognition.  It has a significant effect on our total makeup (mind body and soul).

I often wonder why  the practice of being silent is not actively taught in schools.  While language development and speaking skills are important, The active practice of silence at the appropriate time  has been proven to increase the effectiveness of our speaking skills when they are eventually needed.    It is important for children to be able to choose their words appropriately so that they have maximum effect when employed.  This skill is enhanced by the power of silence, as is other values like calmness, focus and control.

A recent article shows how a school improved its detention rates through meditation,   This proves that  when a child is given the chance to reflect and be still within, they can intuitively sense right from wrong and  immediately have the strength to do it!   While this is a great first step, nothing really beats the effects of nature on achieving a state of deep silence at the child’s different level of need,  and harnessing its power to act on the good thoughts and deeds that come with it.

As adults, we ” clear our heads” by taking a walk in nature, we also achieve certain stillness of mind by being in nature.  These are all first steps to connecting with self.  Stilling the chatter of the mind  enables new ideas to surface and often provides solutions to problems.  At best it makes one more peaceful, whole and sure of the goodness of life.

Teach children the value of silence by-  setting aside a regular time to be still in nature. (You can also play some music with  nature sounds at home)  Ask them to quietly listen to the different sounds  and compare them to the sounds around them at home/ school.  Talk to them about which sounds make them feel good, and produces good thoughts.   As you do this on a regular basis, the children with guidance, will discover for themselves how to still their chatter box mind and be one with their inner selves.  Gradually, and as they grow older, they will  become more alert in a calm way, be able to discern what is of importance in their every day lives and will discover  companionship in silence achieved by being in nature.

The value of silence cannot be overrated. It has a magnetic quality which attracts what you need when used in the right way.  Being in nature helps children develop this quality naturally  in tandem with the other virtues  and helps them to live a more holistic life by  consciously using ALL the seen and unseen gifts at their disposal

The power of good volition is fostered and nourished by the power of silence.
